Panel: Escaping the Backlash? Inclusive Immigration and Integration in Europe

Documentation of the panel discussion at „Progressive Governance Summit 2024" in Berlin, with Gerald Schneider and Stefanie Rueß et. al.

„Immigration remains a primary focus for right-wing mobilisation. Progressives often find themselves caught in defensive battles against this backlash, which they frequently lose. Instead, we need positive perspectives and concrete policies that address current challenges. For this, inclusive immigration and integration policies are essential. However, empirical studies reveal that the processes for asylum decisions and social entitlements are slow and often biased. This undermines the legal and social security of refugees and hinders their potential contributions to host countries. Additionally, potential majorities that could be formed through trade-offs between entrance criteria and rights for immigrants remain unexploited. In this session, Marc Helbling (Universtiy of Mannheim) and Stefanie Rueß (University of Konstanz) will present new empirical findings to lay the groundwork for a discussion with key policymakers on potential solutions, enabling all parties concerned to play their part in the successful integration of immigrants."
