Trust in News, Trust in Data
Vortrag
Veera Ehrlén will give insights to her research on news media trust and personal data collection in the context of news consumption. Media trust and the lack thereof has been a prominent topic of discussion among journalism scholars in recent years. News media trust is often understood through the lens of audience vulnerability to news media’s choices of what the audience should know and how this knowledge is delivered. In her talk, Veera Ehrlén will address how changes in the context for consuming news, being increasingly digital and platformed for most audiences, alter trust negotiation processes. She argues that trust negotiation on datafied social media platforms is relational and entails not accepted but forced vulnerability in relation to news media and the platforms on which they operate.
Veera Ehrlén is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Language and Communication Studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, where she also earned her doctorate in journalism in 2021. She has expertise in studying mediatization of leisure cultures, digitalization of social interaction, social media consumption and content distribution practices, datafication, and news-consumption in data-driven digital environments.
