Serbia’s Student Protests: Building Bridges through Solidarity and Hope

Katarina Ristić  | 2025

Since November, Serbia’s students have mobilized historic protests, demanding accountability for the tragic Novi Sad Canopy collapse, which claimed 15 lives. Their peaceful demonstrations quickly grew, uniting educators, professionals, and citizens across the country against corruption and authoritarian governance. Despite government attempts at provocation, students maintained their peaceful stance, sparking hope in a society long dominated by division and apathy. Katarina Ristić analyzes these remarkable developments in our latest blog, exploring how the protests bridge societal divides—urban and rural, generational, ethnic, and political. She raises a compelling question: Could these inclusive, solidarity-driven demonstrations represent more than just regional resistance? Perhaps they signal broader global trends toward democratic renewal and societal cohesion, offering crucial lessons for confronting authoritarian populism worldwide.
