Dreams of a Renewed Republic
Chloe Ladd, Therese Mager | 2025
French President Emmanuel Macron's startling decision to call snap legislative elections in the summer of 2024 yielded a three-way split in the National Assembly, an unprecedented situation for a nation that has long depended on strong majorities and winner-take-all dynamics. Facing new levels of uncertainty, French voters and leaders alike are wondering: has their political system reached its limits? This article in the Bertelsmann Foundation's Transponder Magazine explores the reasons behind France's vertical and compromise-resistant governing institutions, and asks whether it might be possible to refresh, rather than replace, the Fifth Republic.
